A pool without a setting became a poolside worth lingering in.
A Pool Without a Finished Poolside
The homeowners already had the focal point: a pool set against the Boulder foothills with open views overhead. But the space around it was unfinished. There was no defined area for lounging or hosting, and the lack of privacy made it harder to fully enjoy the yard. The pool was there, and the setting was beautiful, but the surrounding space had not yet been shaped into a place to spend time.
Decks to Define, Cedar to Protect
One plan, two coordinated features. A pair of pool decks created two distinct spaces: one for relaxing and one for gathering. A large custom cedar fence established a clear boundary around the yard, adding privacy without making the space feel closed off.
TimberTech Pro Reserve Pool Decks
- Capped polymer composite built for splash, humidity, and direct Colorado sun
- Resists mold, staining, and fading that break down traditional wood decking
- Runs cooler underfoot than most composites, bare feet travel comfortably from water to chair
- Wire-brushed texture and multi-tonal color deliver real hardwood depth, no splintering, no annual sealing
Custom Western Red Cedar Fence
- Natural oils resist rot, insect damage, and freeze-thaw cycling
- Moves less than pressure-treated pine as humidity shifts, pickets hold alignment over long runs
- Weathers into soft silver-gray if left natural, or keeps a warm amber tone when sealed
- Vertical lines echo deck edges, pulling the yard into one composition
Built in the Right Order
Because the pool remained in place during construction, the order of work mattered. The decks were installed first to maintain pool access as much as possible.
The cedar fence was then built in phases, with posts set in deep concrete footers and panels assembled on site to follow the grade without creating a stepped appearance. Once the main structures were complete, the team finished the detail work, including trimming deck boards tight to the coping and aligning the fence boards evenly throughout.
A Yard Built for Summer Afternoons
This project replaced an underused poolside edge with two distinct outdoor living areas. Pro Reserve decking added durable, low-maintenance surfaces around the pool, while cedar fencing brought in privacy and helped define the space.
What was once open and exposed now feels more functional and enclosed without losing its connection to the yard.
